Australia had thus qualified to meet their old enemy New Zeland in the final. Leading into this match Australia had scored 30 goals and conceeded none and were odds on to win the game and qualify for Egypt. On a wet and miserable day in Christchurch the unthinkable happened. A 15 year old New Zeland midfielder, Blair Scaddon headed in the most important goal of his life to give New Zealand the win by a solitary goal. Many scribes in Australia have considered the loss the worst in the history of the Australian youth side, while for New Zealand it is the first time they have qualified for the finals in their history.
